It has been 7 months from my acceptation to the MPRA program and finally the time of my residency has begun. After these 7 long months of searching for funding and organizing, I arrived to Poznan on Monday April 9th by train from Vienna. The city impressed me at 1st glance. I have no idea what I was expecting, but for sure not this (whatever that is). I heard from many locals, that they would wish the city and the buildings to be cleaner and in a better shape, but I think that the actual state has much more charm and looks (if we exclude the fact, that a lot is under the construction because of the EURO 2012). CMMN SNS PRJCT in Poznan

April 29, 2012 in Angelo Romano, Culture Centre Zamek, Residences 2012, Workshops

Among the guests invited to Poznań by Angelo Romano, a member of the MPRA residency programme, are Laura Kalauz and Martin Schick. The performance artists’ new project “CMMN SNS PRJCT”, which combines theatre and dance, will have its premiere in Poland.

Welcome to the world of “common sense”
Kalauz/Schick’s artistic activity centers around the presence and functions of a medium as a means to unite different worldviews and emotions. Their latest performance, received enthusiastically among others by the audience of Berlin Freischwimmer festiwal and the theatergoers of Oslo, Vienna and Buenos Aires, employs a comic convention of a commercial exchange to pose questions about everything generally called common sense (which inspired the show’s title). The artists, confronting the normal and the abnormal, point to the sphere which goes beyond social relations and the economic logic of profit. Their performance reaches the limits of its defining trait – fictionality, and evolves into a space for whimsical jokes, traders’ disputes and spontaneous reactions. Read the rest of this entry →

During Angelo Romano’s workshops at the National Museum in Poznań, Daniel Kurjaković – swiss curator and writer, presented an unconventional lecture “Comunity, Simultanity, Transformation”. The unconventional element was not only Kurjaković’s inspiring contributions on the subject of art with relation to society, but also the medium. The lecture was transmitted via an instant messenger, a medium which has also been used in many of Angelo Romano’s exhibitions. Read the rest of this entry →

Angelo Romano’s lecture at the University

April 14, 2012 in Angelo Romano, Presentations of artists, Residences 2012, UAM

On Wednesday 11th April one of our residents met his Polish audience for the first time. Angelo Romano talked about his curatorial research with students and members of the AMU Department of Art History.

“How different passages of historical moments are happening together on one place and in the same time?”

This is the title of the project carried out by Romano for the last two years in Shanghai. The starting point for his research was the discovery of a cultural phenomenon, Lai Lai Bar, a club located in a poor quarter of Shanghai, where homosexual people came to dance, accompanied Chinese music, ballroom dances imported from “the West” and structured in that tradition. This unique blend of cultural patterns provoked questions about identity building, historical influences, and the functioning of local communities, which formed the beginning to Angelo Romano’s research.
